    • ]]>     One ontology that discusses how many different kinds of basic “stuff” the whole of reality is made up of is:

    Monism – the doctrine that reality consists of a single basic substance or element.

    Under the monism umbrella fall various ideas about what that one basic substance of the cosmos is:

    • Idealism – the philosophical theory that maintains that the ultimate nature of reality is based on the mind or ideas. Idealism is the opposite of materialism (in which the ultimate nature of reality is based on physical substances). Idealism and materialism are both theories of monism as opposed to dualism and pluralism.

    • Materialism – the philosophical theory that holds that the only thing that exists is matter; that all things are composed of material and all phenomena (including consciousness) are the result of material interactions. In other words, matter is the only substance.

    • Neutral Monism – the metaphysical view that the mental and the physical are two ways of organizing or describing the very same elements, which are themselves “neutral,” that is, neither physical nor mental. This view denies that the mental and the physical are two fundamentally different things. Rather, neutral monism claims the universe consists of only one kind of stuff, in the form of neutral elements that are in themselves neither mental nor physical. (This is currently my view. I really wish it had a different name. :) )

    Dualism – The view that the world consists of, or is explicable in terms of, two fundamental principles, such as mind and matter or good and evil.
